Labor Day Ride to Tulsa - Part 1
September 1, 2003
by David Kincannon
A three day holiday weekend at the end of another hot dry summer comes with three days of rain. Hoping that it will clear up early in the morning, we set out from the east side of Stillwater(Jct 51/108)on a 60 mile journey towards Tulsa and a good lunch. The rain never let up and was actually worse in Tulsa. Six cyclists were in the group: Warren Anglin, Valerie Bloodgood, David Kincannon, Don Norvelle, Bill Venable, and Susan Walker. We rode through Yale, Mannford. and Sand Springs. Somewhere in the rain, the lunch plans were changed from sandwiches or such on Cherry Street (15th) to hot italian dinners at the Olive Garden in Utica Square. Don turned around at Highway 97 in Sand Springs and rode back to Stillwater for a century ride. David rode to and from his house to 108 and ended the day with 85 miles. He also had a flat tire at Mannford. Valerie had a crash on 51 near Keystone Dam but was not hurt. My camera had too much of the rain and stopped working correctly in Tulsa. I missed some good photo opportunities at lunch and the SAG ride home. Dean Bloodgood was kind enough to haul us home using the RDP bike trailer - after he joined us for lunch. Valerie's mother Yvonne also joined us for lunch. The Olive Garden staff were nice and gave us towels to help us get dry.
Later that night with the help of a small phillips screw driver and a hair dryer I was able to get my camera working again.
